With 1.6 million inhabitants, Montréal, in the province of Québec, the second largest city in Canada. It was founded in 1642 and is located just 50 miles from the U.S. border. The city’s name is derived from the nearby mountain Mont Royal (the royal mountain).The official language is French, spoken by about 57% of the population, whereas English as the main language is spoken by only about 18%. The oldest of several colleges in Montréal is McGill University, founded in 1821. Many aerospace and pharmaceutical companies have also settled in Montréal. The Ville intérieure is an underground complex extending some 12 square kilometers with underground shopping arcade and pedestrian subways. Also worth seeing is the pilgrimage chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours (built in the 18th century) and the Pont Jacques-Cartier Bridge. One of the most famous sons of the city is actor William Shatner.
